In order to live an effective life, you must master the ability to think clearly and purposefully. There is a treasure chest full of valuable ideas inside your head right now that can be used to advance your life. Ideas that can create new businesses, processes, works of art, literature, or even solve the greatest of problems. So the question is not, “How can I be more creative?” The right question is, “What is keeping me from tapping the treasure chest of ideas inside my head at this very moment?”
I’ve been a student and practitioner of creativity for over 30 years now and through that time I have identified the most common creativity blockers that invade our life and block our creative output. Here are 5 creativity blockers that you need to keep an eye out for if you want to tap your creativity for a better, fuller life.
Ever wonder what’s going through the mind of people who watch the news and listen to the radio news? Nothing. That’s what. Worse is sitcoms and reality TV programs that fill your mind with meaningless junk and robs your precious evening and weekend time. Be intentional about what you let into your mind and what you allow yourself to spend hours consuming. The scary thing is, sometimes those things that we choose to consume really end up consuming us.
They say that holding a grudge is like drinking poison and hoping the other person dies. If you’re allowing yourself to be consumed by anger or hold a grudge then you are wasting your time looking back and focusing on the past. Creativity cannot be applied the past. Creativity is future focused. It is real-time applied. Be quick to forgive others and don’t hold on to the wrongdoings of others. If you can do this, you will clear your mind and make room for the positivity and creativity you’ve been looking for.
3. Drink #3
Most people don’t think about this, but every substance has a lethal dose. Even good old H2O. Everything, and we mean everything in life should be used with moderation. Alcohol is one of these. A drink or two can help you relax after a hard day’s work, loosen you up before a social outing, and give you the courage you need to get out of your comfort zone. But after a certain point, the beneficial effects take a nose dive and end up leaving you worse off than if you had abstained from alcohol all together. Use a drink or two to unlock a free flow of ideas and out of the box thinking, but beware of the temptation of drink #3, #4, and #5 as they will rob your clarity of thought and creativity.

There are countless examples in our lives of where having rules is a great thing. Just imagine a world where no one obeyed stop signs, traffic lights, or speed limits. While rules can be extremely helpful and keep us safe, too many rules in the wrong places can completely block our creativity. Be especially weary of examples in your life of having rules just for rules’ sake. Eliminate rules that don’t make sense and don’t be afraid to break some rules (that won’t have life altering consequences) every once in a while.

5. Self Doubt
“Man, all the best ideas are in someone else’s head!” Stop lying to yourself!
Your ideas are just as good as other peoples are. The only difference is they’ve taken more time to cultivate and practice their extraction and implementation. Trust yourself. Start today. Give your ideas the chance they deserve.
These are 5 of the most common creativity blockers. If you’re ready to stop reading about and hoping for more creativity, it’s time to get rid of the things in your life that are blocking your creativity and get out there and create!
The world is waiting for you.
